Newton South High School beat out Newton North to win Summer Team Championship

Archrivals for many years, this is the first time Newton South High School won over Newton North; thanks to the efforts of nationally top ranked junior player Alan Shekhtman. For seniors Melissa Kwan (team captain), Xin Shu, Anastasia Rastokina, Tony Yao, Jerry Chen and Derek Mei, this victory couldn’t be any sweeter.  To Newton North senior and Team Captain Xinyin Zhu, you have done such a good job in forming such a strong team despite the lack of star power. We are looking forward to you joining the ranks of graduates like Chris and Kelly, who continue to be passionate about promoting High School badminton.

All the final matches for 1st/2nd place, 3rd/4th place and 5th/6th place were nail biters, with each of team winning by a 6-5 margin in tight games: Westford Academy beat Advance Math and Science Academy for third place and Amherst High School beat Sharon High School for the fifth place.

Special recognition goes to Amherst High School led by team captain and coach Jake Lopez, for the best fighting spirit and for travelling the farthest to participate.

To all the guest players from Southborough , Lincoln-Sudbury, Shrewsbury, Wayland and Lexington, we expect to see you form your teams for the next school year. To all seniors, we hope you continue to play badminton in college and form your college teams so we can also have exciting college competitions.

To all high school badminton players, we hope to see you all play the individual event on June 8.
